About Boerewors
Boerewors is one of the most iconic foods of the South African braai. The name comes from the Afrikaans words “boer” (farmer) and “wors” (sausage), reflecting its roots in traditional farm cooking.
Boerewors is known for its rich flavour, coarse texture, and natural spices. It is traditionally made from high-quality meat, most commonly beef, often mixed with pork or lamb to add extra flavour and juiciness.
What makes boerewors unique is its distinctive spice blend. The classic seasoning includes roasted coriander, black pepper, salt, and warm spices such as cloves and nutmeg. This simple but balanced combination gives boerewors its unmistakable aroma and taste.
Traditionally the sausage is filled into natural casings and shaped into a long spiral before being grilled over hot coals at a braai. The result is a juicy, flavourful sausage that has become a symbol of South African food culture and outdoor cooking.
Today boerewors remains a favourite at braais, gatherings, and celebrations, bringing people together around the fire to enjoy great food and good company.
